Understanding Cataracts and How Surgery Helps

The lens of your eye is normally clear and helps focus light on the retina. As we age, that clear lens can begin to cloud. These cataracts scatter light and distort your vision, making everyday tasks like reading, driving, or recognizing faces more difficult.

Common cataract symptoms include:

  • Blurry, cloudy, or dim vision
  • Increased sensitivity to light or glare
  • Halos around lights
  • Fading or yellowing of colors
  • Double vision in one eye
  • Frequent changes in your glasses prescription

In early stages, brighter lighting or updated eyewear may help. But as cataracts progress, surgery is the only way to restore clear vision. Cataract surgery replaces the clouded natural lens with an artificial one to restore vision and even correct other vision problems like astigmatism or presbyopia.

Cutting-Edge Laser Surgery With CATALYS

Our Huntsville team uses the advanced CATALYS Precision Laser System to perform bladeless cataract surgery with unparalleled accuracy. This technology creates a 3D image of your eye before and during the procedure, allowing for ultra-precise incisions and lens placement, tailored to your unique anatomy.

Compared to traditional cataract removal methods, laser-assisted surgery offers:

  • Cleaner, more accurate incisions
  • Shorter procedure times
  • Faster, more comfortable recovery
  • Enhanced safety and visual outcomes

CATALYS is especially helpful for patients with astigmatism or complex eye conditions.

What to Expect From Cataract Surgery A Step-by-Step Look at the Procedure

After a consultation with one of our ophthalmologists in Huntsville, AL, we’ll confirm if you’re a good candidate for cataract surgery. The procedure typically takes 10–15 minutes per eye and is performed as an outpatient surgery.

Anesthesia

You’ll be awake for the procedure, but we’ll keep you completely comfortable using local anesthesia. You won’t feel pain or see the surgery happening, just a soft light during the process.

Astigmatism Correction

If you have mild to moderate astigmatism, we can correct it during cataract surgery using a toric IOL or laser-guided adjustments. This optional step helps reduce your need for glasses after surgery.

Bladeless Laser Surgery

Using the CATALYS laser system, your surgeon creates a precise incision near the edge of your cornea. The cloudy lens is gently broken up and removed using advanced phacoemulsification techniques.

Implant IOL

Once your natural lens is removed, a clear, artificial lens implant is inserted. This new lens is based on your visual needs.

Eye Shield

Sutures are typically not needed for the incision, but an eye shield may be placed to protect your eye as it heals. You’ll go home the same day with simple aftercare instructions.

Second Surgery

If you have cataracts in both eyes, your ophthalmologist will perform your second cataract surgery in about a week or two, after your first eye heals.

Recovering After Your Surgery

It's normal for your vision to be blurry immediately following cataract surgery, but it will improve in the following days and weeks. While a full recovery from cataract surgery takes about four weeks, most patients notice an improvement in their vision in just a few days. Once your cataracts are removed, be sure to follow all guidelines given to you by your doctor.

Relieving Discomfort

Topical anesthetic is used during surgery, and there are no stitches required to close your incisions, so recovery is fairly quick and painless. While many of our Alabama patients feel no pain after the procedure, you may experience some grittiness and discomfort in your eye. However, it can be managed with over-the-counter pain medication.

Return to Normal Activities

In most cases, our Huntsville patients can resume normal activities one to three days after surgery, though things may look blurry during activities like reading or watching TV. Try to avoid strenuous activities like lifting weights for two weeks and refrain from swimming for about a month to minimize intraocular pressure and to avoid infection.

Vision Care Beyond Cataracts

If you have another complex eye condition like diabetic retinopathy, you’re in the right place. Maynor & Mitchell’s growing partnership with Retina Centers of Alabama allows us to provide coordinated care for patients who need both cataract surgery and long-term retinal support. Whether you’re managing multiple conditions or just beginning to notice changes in your vision, our team serving Huntsville and North Alabama is here to help protect and preserve your sight for the long term.
