What Is LASIK,

And Why Is It Necessary?

The cornea is the transparent, dome-shaped surface that covers the front of the eye. It helps focus incoming light onto the retina, where images are formed. This process of bending light is called refraction. When the shape of the cornea or the overall structure of the eye prevents light from focusing properly, refractive errors occur. These include myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism, which can cause blurred or distorted vision.

During LASIK laser vision correction surgery, corneal tissue is removed and the cornea is reshaped through the use of a special laser. This allows patients to eliminate vision problems and obtain near-perfect vision without the need for glasses or contacts.

Am I a Good Candidate for
Laser Eye Surgery?

Our doctors carefully evaluate every patient to determine whether LASIK is a safe and effective option. If someone is not an ideal candidate, we do not recommend the procedure. While this may seem disappointing, it is ultimately in the patient’s best interest. We prioritize your eye health over performing a surgery that may not deliver optimal results.

One common reason a person may not qualify for LASIK is refractive instability. meaning their vision prescription has changed within the past year. This instability is often seen in individuals who are:

In Their Early 20s Or Younger

Experiencing Fluctuating
Hormones Due to Diabetes

Currently Breastfeeding or Pregnant

Taking Medications That Cause
Vision Fluctuation

Additionally, certain diseases or medications can inhibit proper healing. Maynor & Mitchell will carefully evaluate your candidacy before recommending vision correction surgery.

LASIK Surgery: What to Expect

Our surgeons offer various LASIK surgeries. Since the degree of customization at our Huntsville-area offices is so high, we cannot provide a uniform timeline for each patient. That being said, here is what you can expect if you were to receive a traditional LASIK procedure:

LASIK is typically completed in under 30 minutes.
LASIK is typically completed in under 30 minutes.

Preparing the Eye

Dr. Mitchell sterilizes the surface of your eye and places eye drops that completely numb the treated area.

Precise Reshaping

Next, Dr. Mitchell creates a thin flap on your corneal surface. He will then fold the flap back to access your underlying corneal tissue. The final step is laser reshaping of your corneal tissue to correct refractive errors.

Replacing the Flap

Once the tissue is reshaped, Dr. Mitchell puts the corneal flap back in place where it begins healing on its own. You can likely return to work within three days.

LASIK Has a Great Success Rate A Trustworthy Solution for Common Vision Problems

LASIK technology can dramatically correct major refractive errors. A study published in the Journal of Cataract & Refractive Surgery showcased the laser eye surgery's stellar results:

  • A full 99% of LASIK patients achieve vision that is better than 20/40.
  • Over 90% achieve vision that is 20/20 or better.
  • 96% of patients are satisfied with their laser eye treatment results – the highest satisfaction rate of any elective procedure.

LASIK & Dry Eyes

Woman with dry eyes using eyedrops

It’s common to experience some degree of dry eye after LASIK, especially in the first few weeks. For most patients, symptoms are mild and temporary.

If dryness lingers or becomes uncomfortable, don’t worry. Our team offers a full range of dry eye treatments to help manage symptoms and keep your recovery on track. From specialized eye drops to simple at-home strategies, we’re here to support your healing every step of the way.

A Laser Surgery Alternative

The EVO ICL implantable contact lens is a collamer lens that is surgically implanted and works in conjunction with your eye’s natural functions to produce clearer, sharper vision. A versatile alternative to laser correction surgery, EVO ICL is ideal for a wide range of patients who seek vision correction.

An FDA study found that this may even be a better option than LASIK for patients with very high degrees of nearsightedness.
